February 2018

Hello HCC friends!

We are so fortunate to have Strava so we can keep touch with each other and see all the motivational riding that’s been going on over the winter.

Kick Off Night

Ridley’s will be hosting our KICK OFF THE SEASON evening on Thursday, March 15 at 7 pm.  It will be great to see everyone again! We will have club information for new members, fit kits (these are sizing samples for new Highwood shorts and jerseys) for you to try on and, if you missed the wind up party last November, your very special HCC socks.  This year, Ridley’s will be offering a discounted “bulk” pre-season order on tubes, Gatorskin 25c tires, headlights and tail lights. Yay!

2018 HCC Registration

Registration through Zone 4 will be open by March 1.  New for this year is the HCC t-shirt option.  Along with your membership, you are now able to order a HCC t-shirt for $20.  There will be a cut off date for ordering a shirt with your registration is so make sure you get yours done early.  Shirts will be available in men’s or women’s sizing and sourced from a local company.

Ride types, days and times

Although many of us head out earlier in the spring, Highwood Cycling Club road riding season formally begins the first week in April.  Members can meet for rides up to four times per week.

Tuesday Social Ride – 6 pm from Ridley’s Cycle – we repeat SOCIAL ride!  This means a moderate pace and no-drop ride.  Easily, our most popular of the weekly rides, it’s a great opportunity to meet other cyclists and explore our expanse of paved roads in the area.

Wednesday Women’s Ride – 9 am from Balance Everywear  (Please note: new time and location for 2018)

Thursday Ride consisting of 2 pace groups: ‘the fast group’ and ‘the other group’ (basically, the I-can’t-keep-up-with-the-fast-group/breathing-is-important-group) – 6 pm from Ridley’s Cycle

Saturday Endurance Ride – 9 am from Ridley’s Cycle – 50-100k, usually splits into two distance groups

In addition, we have a number of special event rides throughout the season.  We will have an active website this year so make sure to watch it regularly.  It will be the hub of our club information.

Short notice, member driven rides and special rides will also be updated on Strava and Facebook, under our club name.

Women’s Ride Group

After an amazing launch last year, the Women’s Ride Group continues.  This year, rides will start and finish from Balance Everywear, located at 19 Elma Street.  The time moves up to 9 am and rides will always finish by 11 am.  This road riding group, provides women a safe, social environment to learn skills, develop endurance, gain confidence and an opportunity to meet other women who cycle.  All women are welcome (and encouraged) to come to any of the other HCC group rides.  Sorry, no hybrid bikes.

HCC Women’s Ride Group will be having a social evening on Friday, February 16 at Sonya’s house.  For any ladies who rode last year, on any of the rides, and for those who are interested in riding this season, please come for a visit!  28 Green Haven Drive, Okotoks.  7 pm.  Any questions, please text Sonya 780.832.8328.

2018 Official & Alternative Kits

A huge thank you to Walter for the hours he’s spent over the past few months working on our new HCC kits.  We’ve attached a proof for you because we know everyone is dying to see them.   There is a subtle, but classy, design revision.  New for 2018 – the “official” kit, an alternative kit (ladies, you’re going to love this!), a mountain bike jersey and gloves.  Walter compared a lot of custom design companies and after careful consideration of many factors , this kit will be ordered from Garneau.  You’ll have your choice of two different fits and all designs are available in men’s and women’s sizing.  Kits to try on for sizing will be available March 15-25 at Ridley’s.  This is really exciting stuff!

Corporate Sponsorships

For club members who own their own businesses and would like to be a sponsor on our 2018 kits, we have sponsor spots available on the back pockets of the jerseys.  Each spot is $250 and space is limited (maximum six sponsors).  If you are interested, please email us at highwoodcycling@gmail.com to discuss.  Deadline is February 23rd.

By this time of the year, we are all “socially deprived”.  Looking forward to seeing all our cycling friends on March 15th at Ridley’s!
